Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (FRCS) is a diploma that is widely recognized. It epitomizes the in-depth knowledge of the scientific basis of Ophthalmology. It also proves the experience and competence in implementing that knowledge on patients.
It is an endorsement of the knowledge, experience and training of an ophthalmologist. Candidates with this standard are equipped with the skills of a General Ophthalmologist. They have the ability to deal with patients who have ophthalmic conditions on their own in a safe and professional manner.
Successful candidates will be invited to proceed to admission to the college after completion of the final part of Ophthalmology. Each candidate thus becomes part of a burgeoning membership committed to ensuring high standards of practice via assessment and continuing professional development.
FRCS Exam Structure
The examination is composed of three parts.
They are Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 respectively.
FRCS Part 1 and FRCS Part 2 are written examinations. Part 1 has 160 MCQ questions and is 2 hours in duration. The Part 2 paper is composed of 180 MCQ questions and is 2.5 hours in duration. This paper will include medical emergency questions.
Part 3 consists of structured oral and clinical examinations.
FRCS Exam Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must comply with the following eligibility criteria before the closing date of applications.
FRCS Part 1 Exam
The candidate must possess the primary medical qualification along with a one-year internship. One-year clinical experience in any field is also necessary.
FRCS Part 2 Exam
The candidate should clear the FRCS Part 1 exam or else would be exempted from the examination. An internship of one-year duration is necessary along with the primary medical  qualification. An experience spanning 5 years is another requirement. Out of those 5 years, 54 months of experience should be in clinical ophthalmology.
FRCS Part 3 Exam
The candidate should clear the Part 1 exam. Or else, the candidate will be exempted from this examination. The candidate must also pass the Part 2 exam and along with it should meet the clinical requirements of the Part 2 examination.
